Your formal invitation isn’t the place to mention gifts or money requests. However, it’s important to let guests know about your registry. You can do this by including an informational insert in the envelope with a link to your wedding website. This way, guests can easily find the details they need without it being directly stated on the invitation itself.

The Best Wedding Registries in the UK

After selecting your wedding venue and setting a date, the next steps are preparing your save the dates and wedding invitations. Navigating wedding invitation wording can be tricky, but we’re here to help. You might wonder what details belong on the invitation versus your wedding website, or worry about wording for an evening event. Maybe you’re unsure how to politely note that children aren’t invited. No matter your concern, we’ve got you covered.

Asking how much wedding invitations cost is like asking, “How long is a piece of string?” The range of options for wedding stationery can be overwhelming, with choices in card type, finish, and style all affecting the price. This guide aims to clarify the costs and help you budget for your wedding stationery.

Before diving into details, set a wedding budget. It may not be the most exciting step, but knowing how much you can spend overall is essential. It helps prioritize your spending on the more exciting aspects of your big day.

To estimate your stationery costs, start with your guest list. Determine how many households you’ll invite, as you’ll only need one invitation per household, not per guest. Next, decide which stationery items you’ll need, such as place cards and menus for the reception.

Our house collections offer instant pricing, making it simple and transparent to work within your budget. You can select any design, add the pieces you need, and see the price update in real time. This feature allows you to easily adjust your selections and ensure you stay within your financial plan from the very beginning.

To respond to a wedding invitation invite, first check if an RSVP card or online RSVP option is provided. If there is a card, fill it out with your name and whether you accept or decline the invitation, then mail it back by the specified date. If responding online, follow the link provided and complete the RSVP form. Be sure to respect any special requests, such as dietary restrictions or guest limits. Promptly responding, ideally within a week of receiving the invitation, helps the couple finalise their plans and ensure a smooth celebration.

When to send out

Wedding Invitations

When planning a wedding, it’s crucial to send out invitations at the right time. The provided chart offers a helpful guide on when to send “Save the Dates” and formal invitation wedding invitations based on the wedding month. For weddings in January, save the dates should be sent in March and invitations in May of the previous year. This pattern continues throughout the year, with save the dates generally being sent 10 months before the wedding and formal invitations following about 2 months later.

For example, if your wedding is in June, you should send out save the dates in August and formal invitations in October of the previous year. This timeline ensures guests have ample time to plan and RSVP, helping to make the big day smooth and enjoyable for everyone. Whether your wedding is in the spring, summer, fall, or winter, adhering to these suggested timelines can aid in efficient and stress-free planning.

First Impressions Count

Your wedding invitation is the first glimpse your guests will get of your wedding. It’s like a sneak peek into the style, theme, and level of formality they can expect. I remember one couple I worked with who were planning a whimsical garden wedding. They opted for invitations with watercolour florals and handwritten calligraphy that perfectly set the tone for their enchanting celebration. Their guests knew from the moment they opened the envelope that they were in for a magical experience.

Reflect Your Love Story

Every couple has a unique story, and your wedding invitation is a wonderful opportunity to share a piece of that with your guests. Whether it’s incorporating elements from the place you met, your shared hobbies, or a special memory, personalised invitations can make your celebration even more meaningful. I once designed an invitation for a couple who loved to travel. We created a boarding pass-style invite complete with a map of their journey together. It was a huge hit and really spoke to who they were as a couple.

Keepsake Value

Wedding invitations often become cherished keepsakes for both the couple and their guests. Unique, beautifully designed invitations are more likely to be saved and remembered. I still have the invitation from my best friend’s wedding displayed on my bulletin board—it’s a lovely reminder of that special day.

Custom Artwork

One of the hottest trends in wedding invitations is custom artwork. From commissioned illustrations to hand-painted details, custom artwork adds a personal and artistic touch. Imagine an invitation featuring a hand-drawn portrait of the couple or a painting of the wedding venue. These unique touches make the invitation a true work of art.

Innovative Materials

Gone are the days when wedding invitations were limited to paper. Today, couples are exploring innovative materials like acrylic, wood, fabric, and vellum.

These materials not only look stunning but also feel luxurious. Acrylic invitations, for example, have a modern, sleek appearance that’s perfect for a contemporary wedding. Wooden invitations, on the other hand, are ideal for rustic or nature-themed weddings.

Wording

One of the easiest ways to make your wedding invitation unique is through personalised wording. Think beyond the traditional “You are cordially invited” and craft a message that resonates with you and your partner. Whether it’s a funny anecdote, a heartfelt message, or a quote that means something special to you, personalised wording adds a touch of individuality.

Creative Formats

Why stick to the standard rectangular card when there are so many creative formats to explore? Fold-out maps, booklets, and scrolls are just a few options that can make your invitation stand out. I once helped a couple create a fold-out map invitation for their destination wedding. It included details about the ceremony, reception, and local attractions, all beautifully illustrated. Their guests loved it and many mentioned how it made them even more excited to attend.

Embellishments

Adding embellishments to your wedding invitations can elevate their look and feel. Wax seals, ribbons, and laser cuts are just a few examples of how you can add texture and depth. I worked with a bride who was having a vintage-inspired wedding, and we used lace and ribbon to create an invitation that felt both elegant and timeless.

DIY vs. Professional Stationer

Deciding whether to go the DIY route or hire a professional stationer is a big decision. DIY invitations can be a cost-effective and fun way to add a personal touch, but they can also be time-consuming and require a certain level of skill. On the other hand, professional stationers bring expertise and access to high-quality materials and printing techniques. I always recommend considering your budget, time, and desired level of detail when making this decision.

Incorporating Personal Touches

Adding personal touches to your wedding invitations can make them even more special. This could be anything from a family crest or cultural symbol to inside jokes and shared memories. I once created invitations for a couple who loved to write love letters to each other. We incorporated excerpts from their letters into the design, which made the invitations incredibly sentimental and unique.

If you’re having a destination wedding, why not incorporate that theme into your invitations? Passport and boarding pass designs are popular choices that immediately convey the excitement of travel. Including a map of the destination and local attractions can also be helpful for your guests. One of my favourite projects was creating a boarding pass invitation for a couple getting married in Hawaii. The invitation included beautiful tropical imagery and a detailed itinerary of the wedding events.

Eco-friendly Invitations

For environmentally-conscious couples, eco-friendly invitations are a great option. Recycled paper, plantable seed paper, and digital invitations are all sustainable choices that can be just as beautiful as traditional ones. I recently worked with a couple who wanted to minimise their wedding’s environmental impact. We chose plantable seed paper for their invitations, which not only looked lovely but also allowed guests to plant wildflowers as a reminder of the wedding.

Themed Invitations

Themed invitations are a fun way to reflect your wedding’s style and personality. Whether it’s rustic, vintage, modern, or fairytale-themed, there are countless ways to bring your vision to life. I once designed invitations for a couple who were having a Harry Potter-themed wedding. The invitations were styled like Hogwarts acceptance letters, complete with wax seals and parchment paper. It was a magical touch that guests adored.

Start Early

One of the most important tips I can offer is to start the design process early. Creating unique wedding invitations takes time, especially if you’re working with a professional stationer or incorporating custom artwork. Starting early allows for multiple revisions and ensures that everything is perfect. Ideally, you should start planning your invitations at least six months before your wedding date.

Budget Considerations

While unique invitations can be stunning, they can also be expensive. It’s important to set a budget and find creative ways to stay within it. For example, you might choose to splurge on custom artwork but save on printing by opting for digital invites or printing them yourself. Another tip is to keep the main invitation simple and add unique touches through embellishments or custom envelopes.

Choosing the Right Stationer

Choosing the right stationer can make a huge difference in the quality and uniqueness of your invitations. Take the time to research and read reviews, and don’t be afraid to ask for samples of their work. Communicating your vision clearly is also crucial. Provide as much detail as possible about your wedding theme, colors, and personal preferences. A good stationer will work with you to bring your vision to life.

Overcomplicating the Design

While it’s tempting to include every possible detail and embellishment, sometimes less is more. Overcomplicating the design can make the invitation look cluttered and difficult to read. Focus on a few key elements that truly reflect your style and keep the overall design elegant and cohesive.

Ignoring Practicality

It’s important to remember that your invitation needs to be functional as well as beautiful. Ensure that it fits within standard postal requirements to avoid additional shipping costs. Also, consider the weight and size—overly heavy or bulky invitations can be cumbersome for guests to handle.

Failing to Proofread

Finally, always proofread your invitations before printing. Typos and errors can be embarrassing and costly to fix. Double-check all the details, including dates, times, and addresses. It’s a good idea to have a few trusted friends or family members review the invitation as well.
